What Is the Chevening Scholarship?
Chevening is funded by the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and has supported professionals from around the world since 1983. It isn't a traditional academic scholarship - it's designed for emerging leaders who already have real-world work experience and the potential to create positive change in their home country. The award covers a one-year, full-time taught Master's degree at any UK university, in virtually any field of study.
What Does It Cover?
Chevening is fully funded, meaning successful applicants receive support for:
- University tuition fees
- Monthly living stipend
- Travel costs to and from the UK
- An arrival allowance and additional grants for essentials
Am I Eligible?
Before you start your application, check that you meet the core requirements:
- You are a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory
- You hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies you for a UK postgraduate program (typically equivalent to a UK 2:1 honor's degree)
- You have at least two years (2,800 hours) of work experience, gained after completing your undergraduate degree
- You intend to return to your home country for at least two years after finishing the scholarship
- You do not hold British or dual British citizenship (some exceptions apply)
- You are not currently employed by, or closely related to someone employed by, the UK government or a Chevening partner organization

Once the application window closes, you will not be able to access the online system — so there's no room for last-minute submissions.
How the Application Works
- Complete the eligibility check on the official Chevening website.
- Apply through the Online Application System (OAS) with your educational credentials, valid passport/ID, and contact details for two referees.
- Write four essays (maximum 300 words each) covering leadership, networking, your study plan, and your career goals — this is where most applications are won or lost.
- Apply to three different eligible UK Master's courses, and secure an unconditional offer from at least one by the following July.
- Shortlisted candidates are interviewed by British embassies and high commissions after the reading committees complete their assessment.
Chevening is highly competitive, with an acceptance rate of roughly 2–3% globally. A strong application comes down to demonstrable leadership, a clear and realistic career plan, and essays that show — not just tell — the impact you plan to make.
